Firstport - a one-stop shop for disability information

Have you heard about Firstport? If not then it might be time to check it out.

Our Firstport website is a one-stop-shop for information related to disability in New Zealand, and has so far welcomed over 35,000 people looking for advice or support.

Developed to replace our previous information-sharing website Weka, Firstport's design is fully accessible and signposts visitors to the appropriate next steps in terms of funding sources, finding local support services and accessing their local disability information centres. The site also features disability-related events and news and a whole range of resources and articles aimed at helping people with disabilities live more independent lives.

One of the unique features of Firstport is that all the imagery on the site was provided by people living with a disability in New Zealand. A competition run last year encouraged people to submit photos of how they view life with a disability, with the images now taking pride of place across the pages of the site. The hope was that the imagery would make the site a more engaging place to be, and that it would reflect the lives of visitors more accurately, an approach which is mirrored in the site's In My Own Words series. Through a series of videos, photos and articles, Firstport acts as a platform for people to share their stories of living with a disability, or sharing their life with someone who does, and the videos have clocked up over 100,000 views between them.

The site can be a helpful referral resource for health professionals working with clients in the community, as they can use it to direct clients to reliable sources of information regarding funding, assessments, support services and equipment providers. It's a fully mobile adaptive site, meaning it performs on mobile phone, tablet or desktop and due to it's accessible design can be fully accessed by visitors using technology such as screen readers.

So if you haven't already, check it out. The team are always looking for ideas for new topics to cover so if you think something else could be added to the site, or to request hard copy Firstport leaflets for your organisation to distribute to customers who may find the site useful, please do get in touch via the 'contact us' button on the site.
